In Chinese culture, the full moon is a symbol for a family reunion, which is why it is known as the festival of reunion. It is on September 10 in the Gregorian calendar in 2022,which is also Teachers' Day this year.
The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations could date back to more than 2,000 years ago, and there are many legends about this festival. The most popular one among the Chinese people is "Chang'e flying to the moon".
Do you know about it ?
In ancient times, there was a hero named Hou Yi who was excellent at archery, his wife was Chang'e.One day, Hou Yi got the elixir of immortality from the Queen Mother of the West, while his apprentice, Feng Meng, forced Chang’e to give him the elixir of immortality. In desperation, Chang’e swallowed it and fly to the moon, and she lived in the Moon Palace.
One year, ten suns rose in the sky together, causing great disaster to the people. Yi shot down nine of the suns on the peak of Mount Kunlun and left only one to provide light and heat.
On the festival day, family members get together to enjoy the bright full moon, eat moon cakes, and express strong yearnings toward family members and friends who live afar.
In Chinese culture, a round shape symbolizes completeness and reunion. Thus, the sharing and eating of round mooncakes among family members during the week of the festival signify the completeness and unity of families.
